Postmaster General John E. Potter told a U.S. Senate subcommittee today that the economic downturn has triggered a dramatic drop in mail volumes and to arrest a “severe financial crisis,” he asked Congress to alter the agency’s payment schedule for funding its retiree health benefits. /nIn addition, Potter asked that Congress provide the Board of Governors with the flexibility to reduce the number of mail delivery days each week. Should a deepening national recession continue to erode mail volume and revenue, he said six day delivery may not be affordable. The Postal Service has been required by federal law to deliver six days a week since 1983.
